Dear Senior Executive:

My name is Carlos de la Huerga and I have devoted my entire 25 year career to innovation and intellectual property management.

What makes me unique is that I’ve spent about half that time as a senior executive in a several hundred million dollar company and the other half as a prolific innovator.

As an innovator, I’ve been issued over 25 patents (with many more pending), founded four companies, raised millions of dollars in external financing, negotiated multiple patent license agreements and settled a multi-million dollar patent infringement lawsuit against a Fortune 100 company.

I’ve also develop two software tools that automate many of the patent-related tasks that make the process of prior art searching and patent writing so terribly inefficient (www.PriorArtSearchTool.com, www.PatentQualityTool.com ).

Today, I split my time between working on my own innovations and consulting with other companies through one of my four companies – Telaric Ideas.

Let me share the challenge I see facing most businesses

In my experience, most business innovation initiatives fail to generate lasting economic value.

See, true innovation in the marketplace is a rare event - as is writing patents that have real commercial worth. In fact, only 3% of issued patents ultimately produce any financial value.

Yet, billions of dollars continue to be spent on new idea development and intellectual property protection because business leaders understand that this is their only true source of sustainable competitive advantage.

Consequently, the critical challenge for most companies is to find ways to increase the return on their investment in innovation while decreasing the risk.

In response to this challenge, I’ve put together a workshop on the topics of innovation and intellectual property strategy.

The Innovation & IP Boot Camp – and why its unique

This 6-hour workshop is designed to help CEOs, business owners and entrepreneurs – and members of their management teams from R&D, operations and business development – beat the odds of innovation and generate real profits and positive cash flow from new ideas.

Innovation and intellectual property are complex issues. However, most efforts to educate business executives in these areas cover only such superficial topics as "How to brainstorm", "The four kinds of intellectual property" or "The three criteria for obtaining a patent.”

This type of information is of little value to a businessperson. What’s needed is more in-depth - but practical - information on these topics. That’s what we deliver at this boot camp.

We call this a “boot camp” because of the nature of our 6 hours together. Sure, you will hear a bit of theory – but mostly you are going to receive blunt, no-nonsense advice on how to drive innovation into your company and then use the appropriate intellectual property strategies to maximize the economic value gained from your new ideas.

Rather than learning from attorneys, you will be interacting with business executives and innovators who have real-world experience with the challenges of originating new ideas within both large and small companies and then protecting them via the complexities of intellectual property.

What you will learn

With intellectual property comprising more than 70% of the total value of U.S. company assets, it is essential that business executives have an in-depth understanding of how to use innovation and IP protection to support the business strategy and economic value of their companies.

This boot camp will deliver that needed understanding. Here is just some of the indispensable information with which you will leave our workshop:

Ö   How to make sure your innovation and intellectual property strategy supports your business goals.

Ö   How to identify and support the creative people within your organization who will likely be the primary source of innovation within your company.

Ö   How to tap into the creative potential of your customers, suppliers, and channel partners to drive new ideas into your organization.

Ö   How to use rapid prototyping to stimulate innovation.

Ö   How to determine the core invention within your innovation that will drive most its value in the marketplace.

Ö   The key criteria to use to determine what type of intellectual property to use to protect a specific innovation.

Ö   How to work with an intellectual property attorney to increase the chances of a quality outcome and to lower your costs.

Ö   How to save a bunch of money on your patent filing fees.

Ö   How to avoid patent infringement lawsuits that could cost your business millions of dollars.

Ö   How to determine the commercial licensing value of an innovation that doesn’t fit with your core product development strategy – are their really “Rembrandts in your closet?

Ö   The insider secrets about the patenting process from a businessperson’s viewpoint - that your patent attorney will likely not tell you.

Ö   What you should know about strategies your competitors may use to compromise your intellectual property strategy and what you can do to protect yourself from their efforts.

Ö   Why you may never want to use a provisional patent application as part of your intellectual property strategy.

Ö   How to assure your employees, suppliers, consultants, etc. don’t compromise your intellectual property protection.

Ö   Why starting down the patenting path to protect your intellectual property is like jumping off a cliff.

Ö   When to use a defensive versus an offensive patent strategy.

Ö   What you need to know about contingency patent litigation attorneys before becoming involved in a patent litigation lawsuit.

Ö   What options are available if you suspect another company is infringing on your patent portfolio – and which approach should you choose in what situation.

Ö   How do you make sure that your patent portfolio could actually stand up in court.

Ö   What are patent hacking and patent blocking and what you can do about these strategies your competitors may be implementing against you.

As you can see from this partial list of topics, you should come prepared with an extra ink cartridge for your pen – since you’ll be writing like crazy to capture the boatload of actionable ideas that are specifically pertinent to your business.

This boot camp is available on special request to be held on your premises. We look forward to hearing from you.
